Irregular arguments

Seeing some of the bitchfest which goes on with FB fanatics, bemoaning about irregular units, I thought I would investigate it a bit and see what the friggin issue is.

First off what is an Irregular unit?

Well, an irregular unit is a unit that is marked with an * after its name.

That little star means it no longer unlocks any Hero/Monster/Titan/War Engines or Troops. It also means it counts as a troop for the unlocks, so you need a non * to unlock it and shove it in your army.

Also irregular units cannot be taken as allies, for those who are shit generals and need the crutch of allies.

So….

Across all factions:
  • There are between 5 and 12 different unlocking unit types
  • Between 6 and 19 actual unlocking units (including Reg, horde & Legions)
  • The cheapest unlock ranges between 75 to 200pts
  • Number of irregular unit types in a faction range from 1 to 8

So what…

Order of the Brothermark has the least amount of irregular units with only 1.

Twilight Kin has the most amount of irregular units with 8, closely followed by Ogres & Empire of Dust with 7.

Ratkin Slaves has the least amount of actual unlocking units (including Reg, horde & Legions) with only 6 (only 1 more than the different unlocking unit types they have), closely followed by Twilight Kin and Order of the Green Lady with 7.

The most expensive unlock is with the Ogres at 200pts, the next down is 60pts cheaper with Trident Realms and Forces of Nature.

Average cost of an unlock excluding the ogres is 105pts, including Ogres it raises to 110pts.

Well is there an issue?

For the following races, not at all, they have loads of unlocks when compared to other factions, so quit bitching ;)

In order of highest number of unlocks, the following have between 8 to 12 (Undead) different unlocking unit types with between 10 (Trident Realms) to 19 (Undead) of actual unlocking units (including Reg, horde & Legions):
  1. Undead
  2. Forces of Nature
  3. The Herd
  4. Trident Realms of Neritica
  5. Northern Alliance
  6. Kingdoms of Men
  7. Order of the Brothermark
  8. Orcs
  9. Free Dwarfs
  10. Dwarfs
  11. Basileans
  12. Salamanders
  13. Varangur
  14. League of Rhordia

Seen the good, lets see the bad…

In order of lowest number of unlocks, the following have 5 different unlocking unit types with either 6 or 7 actual unlocking units (including Reg, horde & Legions):
  1. Ratkin Slaves
  2. Order of the Green Lady
  3. Twilight Kin

Goblins although only has 5 different unlocking units, they have 10 actual unlocking units (including Reg, horde & Legions), so they are cool.

Ratkin Slaves only have 4 irregular unit types, so there faction is not overloaded with irregular units, just more lacking unlocking units/sizes. Similar with Order of the Green Lady.

Twiglet Kin though have 8 irregular unit types, which when paired with only 5 unlocking unit types (or 7 actual unlocking unit sizes), they have more irregular units than core units.

Ogres and Empire of Dust have 7 irregular units against 6 unlocking unit types (or 9 actual unlocking unit sizes).

Forces of the Abyss have 6 irregular units against 6 unlocking unit types (or 8 actual unlocking unit sizes).

The two factions hurt the most are Twiglets and Ogres, a few others have an ouchie, while the majority of the other are raging hypochondriacs.
